In a recent article I have come
across, the idea of eating healthy has a price. No pun intended. Studies are
finding that eating healthy costs more than buying junk food and eating
unhealthy. One study conducted how much it would add up to have more potassium
in one’s daily diet. Being that
potassium is of the more expensive nutrients one could consume, it added up to
a mere $380 on a yearly basis according to the article published on Health
Affairs. Putting the amount of money an average American spends on food each
year puts into perspective the notion of whether or not to buy and consume
junk food vs. healthy food.
Buying junk food or healthy food
depends on each person’s social economic status, gender, race, and how much
income they receive on a month’s basis. It also reflects on one’s education and
lack of ignorance in the healthy food vs. non-healthy food aspect. It is also
an identity in which each individual carries, making you, you. Your views and
practices determine whether or not you a healthy individual.
It is unfortunate to know that
there are many times where junk food costs more than healthy food. Just because
someone does not have that certain amount of money, it should not mean they
should have an unequal access of healthy foods in comparison to those who do
have money. There should be some type of easy way where low-income individuals
can consume fruits and vegetables at a low cost just like higher-income
individuals do.
