In the article,
“Eating Healthy Is A Privilege Of The Rich,” it portrays the idea that eating a
healthy diet is a earned not automatically achieved. The author continues by
suggesting that the government should be of help towards individuals and families
when it comes to eating healthy on a daily basis. The author then paints the
idea of a fresh home-cooked meal: a piece of salmon, greens, and rice and
concluding to the fact that most Americans can not afford this type of meal.
As stated in the
article, a study was conducted in which a survey was administered to
individuals in Washington asking what type of food they consumed. The people
that were closest to the guidelines were consuming healthier foods that those
than those individuals who were not as close. In this same study, it was
concluded that about 15 % of households in America or 49 billion people, do not
have enough money to pay for food that they want to consume every day.
It is saddening to
know that you can only be healthy by being of a particular social class. There
are many people that would like to be healthy but cannot due to the amount of
income they receive. Being separated through classes not only causes
stratification between people, but also creates barriers which keep the
lower-income people at the bottom. This makes them less healthy and essentially
have a shorter life span when compared to those people that are of a higher
class.
